Worlds Wrapped - Groups Day 6

Worlds Wrapped - Groups Day 6

Another day of groups has concluded, meaning more teams have advanced to the quarter finals while others have been eliminated from the tournament. The day ended in a tense tiebreaker to decide seeding, so let's break down the biggest talking points from the day.

JDG Claim #1 Seed

After dominating G2 and EG, JDG and DK qualified for the quarter finals. This wasn't a surprising outcome, with both teams looking fantastic during the first round robin and dismantling the LEC and LCS representatives.

When the two faced off in their best-of-one, DK eviscerated JDG and closed out the game in less than 30 minutes. JDG made several sloppy mistakes in the early game, which DK were quick to punish. With both teams tied at 5-1, they immediately rematched to determine quarter-final seedings.

DK pulled ahead in a scrappy early game after pulling off some clean dives, funneling gold onto deokdam's Aphelios and making him a huge threat early on in the game. Despite being over 4k gold down, JDG found a huge team fight around the Drake and utilised their multiple dive tools to blow up Aphelios:

JDG evened out the gold difference with this single team fight, and had the composition to lock down DK's LeBlanc and Aphelios. Once JDG had a foothold back in the game, they were relentless and crushed DK in every single team fight. They took down the Nexus, and the game's gold graph says it all:

With this win, JDG advanced to the quarter-finals as the first seed while DK claimed second. This was a huge win for the LPL Summer champions considering they bounced back from the crushing defeat to DK that took place just before this game.

It was another sad day for LCS and LEC fans, as EG and G2 were eliminated from Worlds. EG have a lot to be proud of after making it through play-ins and adjusting to difficult circumstances with a last minute substitution, closing out their tournament with an assertive win against G2.

Meanwhile, this was always going to be a rebuilding year for G2 after they overhauled their roster. It was a surprise for them to win the Spring Split and make it to MSI, and though this wasn't the outcome they hoped for, perhaps this roster can make some serious waves with a little more time.

Yuumi

The most hated cat in Runeterra has been dominating the conversation over the last few days, as she's wormed her way back into the meta. Although her heals were nerfed a few patches ago – which fans hoped would keep her out of Worlds –  she received some compensatory buffs to her Q a few days after.

Instead of being a heal bot, she's now back to being an artillery mage all while being safely attached to an ally. She's maxing and spamming Q, rushing Luden's, and shredding through health bars with next to no counterplay.

It's frustrating that after attempts were made to nerf her in time for Worlds, this was immediately followed up with compensatory buffs. Fans, pros and analysts alike are tired of seeing such an uninteractive champion dominate the Worlds meta, and unfortunately, it doesn't look like that will change any time soon.

Highlight Play

Despite giving over Baron, JDG left DK limping after wiping them off the map:

369 decimated on Aatrox, even after being crushed on Gragas in the previous game. If he keeps rolling 9s, other top laners should be terrified.

Tomorrow will see Group C return to the stage. Rogue are looking to defend their top spot as the 'last hope of the West', but they will have their work cut out for them against Top Esports, DRX and Gam Esports; don't miss it.
