How to Build Team Compositions in Valorant

As a tactical FPS, Valorant is a team video game. Although individual skills such as aim matter, Valorant requires coordination and team effort to win. A team needs to know how to set up plays, use utility, communicate properly, and much more. Yet, one of the most important aspects of Valorant is drafting a good team composition, so every player knows his role in the game.

Understanding Agent roles

All Valorant Agents are divided into four classes. Every class fulfills a different role and excels in different tasks needed to win games in Valorant. A well-balanced team composition needs to consist of a set of Agents that can do all the tasks required you need on both Attack and Defense.

Controller Agents bring smokes to the table. They are crucial parts of every team composition cause blocking the enemy's vision makes your team much more dangerous on both Attack and Defense.
Controller Agents: Brimstone, Omen, Viper, Astra, Harbor

Duelists are an offensive class that loves fragging and picking up one versus one fights. They are usually very mobile and explosive; however, they don't bring as much utility to the table. Duelists excel at picking the enemy defense apart and creating space for their teammates when executing a bomb site.
Duelist Agents: Phoenix, Jett, Reyna, Raze, Yoru, Neon

Contrary, Sentinels are the defensive class of agents in Valorant. Their main goal is to be an anchor to a bomb site, and they typically slow down, stall, or even outright stop enemy pushes on certain areas of the map.
Sentinel Agents: Killjoy, Cypher, Sage, Chamber

Initiators are probably the most versatile class in Valorant, which is why they are highly important in today's meta. They are great at setting their teammates up for success by providing crowd control or information.
Initiator Agents: Sova, Breach, Skye, KAY/O, Fade

What goes into building a team composition?

Every team needs at least one Agent with smokes, one with flashes, and one with recon abilities. From there, you can build depending on your preferences, the meta, and the map you are playing.

More often than not, a well-rounded team composition will have one Agent from three classes with two agents from the fourth and final class. In today's day and age, teams like to run double-Initiator comps. Their utility is very valuable, and plenty of Initiator Agents such as Sova, Fade, and KAY/O are considered very powerful.

However, that doesn't mean it has to be applied in every situation. There are scenarios where teams run no Duelist compositions, double-Controller compositions, etc. With balance changes and new Agent releases, the meta tends to shift and change up the draft dynamics.

Also, a few Agents are capable of fulfilling multiple roles at once, giving you more flexibility in drafts. For example, Chamber is a Sentinel/Duelist hybrid due to his unique kit. He has Sentinel utility, but he is also the best Operator user in the game with an instant teleport. Another example is Viper, a Controller who can play a Sentinel role with her wall and Snake bites.
