ARAM 2023 Update

As the only permanent game mode outside of Summoner's Rift, ARAM is an important feature of League's ecosystem. With the 2023 Preseason, several changes have been announced for the beloved game mode.

Balance Updates

The first round of balance updates affect all champions:

  • Lifesteal and Omnivamp against minions reduced by 50%
  • Bonus MR for melee champions increased to 15, up from 10
  • Long-range damage (over 1000 units) reduced; the damage reduction scales with how far the ability has travelled

With a reduction to healing from minions, ADCs will be more vulnerable and won't be able to sustain themselves using minion waves. Melee champions will have a better time in the front line, taking less damage from the barrage of abilities thrown at them.

Poke champions have always been strong in ARAM given the limited space to dodge their abilities. The long-range damage nerf will help keep these champions in line, such as Ziggs and Zyra.

Champion Updates

Energy-based champions struggle with their resources when there's so much fighting and they can't build any items to increase their regen. Therefore, the following champions received a 20% bonus to their energy regen: Akali, Kennen, Lee Sin, and Zed.

Meanwhile, a plethora of melee based champions have received a 20% bonus to their Tenacity to help them survive in the front line if hit by a CC ability: Akali, Ekko, Elise, Evelynn, Fizz, Kassadin, Katarina, Kayn, Kha’Zix, LeBlanc, Pyke, Qiyana, Rek’Sai, Rengar, Talon, and Zed.

Lastly, Ashe has recieved a 20 ability haste nerf to limit how often she can spam her annoying W arrows.

Map Updates

Hexgates are coming to the Howling Abyss, helping your team get back into the action much quicker after you die. These connect from your base to your outer tower, then to your inhib tower if your outer tower gets destroyed. You can also use the enemy hextech gates to fall back.

Another dynamic map update is the inclusion of fallen towers; once you destroy a tower, it permanently leave behind rubble that functions as new terrain. Teams will have to play around this new terrain and use the new choke points around the debris to their advantage.

The final map update is the addition of a new brush in the middle of bottom side of the map, giving players more opportunities to make sneaky plays.

QoL Updates

A few QoL updates are coming to ARAM. Battle Boosts are a neat idea, but it can be annoying if your team uses one and your skin changes to one you didn't want at the last second. These last second boosts will now be restricted.

During champ select, you'll be able to see which champions would give you a Hextech Chest if you earn an S- rank or above. This may affect your champion choice and incentivise you to play a champion you might not otherwise.

Summary

Riot are committed to supporting ARAM and will be deploying more balance updates throughout the season. Betweem these balance updates and the expanded map features, ARAM has been given a new lease on life.
